Filming in Sóller & the Orange Groves: Rural Permit Guide

Sóller is one of Mallorca's most beloved towns — a sun-filled valley of orange and lemon groves, art nouveau architecture, and a vintage tram that runs down to the port. It's a location that appears regularly in travel campaigns, fashion editorials, and television productions. It's also a useful case study in how rural filming permits work across the island.

The Sóller Valley Landscape
The Sóller valley sits within the Serra de Tramuntana UNESCO zone, which means the broader landscape falls under Consell de Mallorca oversight. However, the town itself and its immediate public spaces are governed by the Ajuntament de Sóller — a separate and generally responsive municipal administration.

Productions working in Sóller typically need to navigate both layers: municipal permits for town locations, and Consell de Mallorca authorisation for the surrounding groves, terraces, and mountain approaches.

The Orange Groves
The citrus groves that fill the valley floor are almost entirely on private agricultural land. There is no public right of access for filming purposes. To shoot in the groves, you need:

  • A location agreement with the individual landowner
  • Consell de Mallorca authorisation if the land falls within a protected agricultural zone (most of the valley does)
  • Confirmation that no environmental restrictions apply to the specific parcel

Landowner negotiations in Sóller are generally positive — the area has a long history of welcoming creative productions — but they need to be handled correctly. Turning up unannounced and asking to film is not an approach that works here. A local contact who knows the farming families makes a significant difference.

The Vintage Tram
The Sóller tram — which runs between the town square and Port de Sóller along a scenic coastal route — is one of the most requested transport-related locations in Mallorca. It's operated by Ferrocarril de Sóller S.A., a private company.

Filming on or alongside the tram requires direct negotiation with the company. Options range from filming the tram in operation from public spaces (simpler, lower cost) to exclusive hire of a tram carriage for a specific shoot window (more expensive, but operationally straightforward). The company is experienced in working with productions.

The Town — Plaça de la Constitució and Surroundings
The main square with its distinctive art nouveau bank building and the adjacent streets are public spaces under Ajuntament de Sóller jurisdiction. The municipality is smaller and generally faster to process applications than Palma — allow 5–7 working days in low season.

Market day (Saturday) brings significant crowds and is both a challenge and an opportunity depending on your brief. If you want authentic local atmosphere, Saturday morning delivers it. If you need a clean location, plan for a weekday early morning.

Rural Permit Principles — Applicable Across Mallorca
Sóller is a good illustration of the general approach to rural filming across the island:

  • Identify whether the land is private, municipal, or Consell-managed
  • Secure landowner agreements for all private land before submitting official applications
  • Factor in UNESCO or natural park designations that add a review layer
  • Always approach landowners through a trusted local intermediary where possible

e-clips.tv has established contacts with landowners across the Sóller valley and throughout Mallorca's rural interior. We handle both the official permit process and the private location negotiations.
